Samson has made a strong case so far in the current season of the Indian Premier League by scoring 385 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 161.08. In comparison, his nearest rival for the position of second wicketkeeper batsman after Rishabh Pant, Lokesh Rahul has scored 378 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 144.27. There is not much difference between the two batsmen in terms of strike rate, but in the case of Samson, these figures are proof of his impact on the Rajasthan Royals team.

In the past, the strongest argument against Samson was that his performances declined as the tournament progressed. Chasing 197 runs in Lucknow in front of capable bowlers was not an easy task and the Royals also lost the wicket of Jos Buttler early in the innings. In the ninth over, Royals' score was 78 runs for three wickets and Samson (71 not out, 33 balls, seven fours, four sixes) and Dhruv Jurel (52 not out, 34 balls) helped the team win by seven wickets with one over to spare. The old Samson could have missed this opportunity by playing poor shots in an attempt to dominate the bowler but now the right-handed batsman has the patience to wait for the opportunity and was confident enough to take the team to the target.

The merger of skill and patience has made him a more desirable player than ever before. Along with this, the ability and flexibility to play big shots increase his importance. He is comfortable batting from number one to number five which Rahul cannot do. Rahul is a slow starter who is capable of scoring runs quickly later on. But Samson can play aggressively from the first ball itself. Since the 2020 season of IPL, no batsman has been able to hit as many sixes as Samson (110). This is a big feat in a league with the presence of players like Butler, Andre Russell, Glenn Maxwell, Rinku Singh, Jonny Bairstow.
